Narration HS 2nd year- 2020

  1. Alexander said to Porus, “How do you desire to be treated?” He answered, “Like a king.”

Ans: Alexander asked Porus How he desired to be treated. He answered that he desired to be teated like a king.

2. The boys exclaimed in joy that they had all passed the test and that they would celebrate their success the next day.

Ans: The boys said, “Hurrah! we all have passed the test. ‘’we shall all celebrate our success tomorrow”.

Narration HS 2nd year- 2019

  1. Reena said to the boy, “What’s the matter? Why are you crying? Be cheerful.”

Ans: Reena asked the boy what the matter was and why he was crying. She (Reena) asked him to be cheerful.

2. The customer inquired if he could get a garden-roller in that shop. The assistant respectfully replied that he would get it in the hardware department.

Ans: The customer said,” Can I get a garden roller in this shop?’’ The assistant replied,’’ Sir, You will get it in the hardware department.’’

Narration HS 2nd year- 2018

  1. The Speaker said, “I thank you, ladies and gentlemen, for giving me a kind hearing. When I arrived here yesterday I did not believe that I might meet so large a gathering”.

Ans: Addressing the audience as ladies and gentlemen ,the speaker thanked the people for giving him a kind hearing. He also said that when he reached there a day before, he did not believe that he might meet so large a gathering

2. His mother exclaimed in sorrow that she had not a bit of bread to give him and that he had eaten up all the provisions she had in the house the previous day.

Ans: His mother said,” Alas! I do not have a bit of bread to give you and you have eaten up all the provisions I had in the house yesterday.”

  1. The boy said to the teacher, “Sir, I am weak in English and seek your advice.” “Read the text thoroughly and try to express your ideas in simple correct English,” said the teacher.

Ans: The boy told the teacher respectfully that he was weak in English and sought his advice. The Teacher advised him to read the text thoroughly and try to express his ideas in simple correct English.

2. My friend told me that he was very thirsty and requested me to give him a glass of water.

Ans: My friend said to me,’’ I am very thirsty. Please give me a glass of water’’

Narration HS 2nd year- 2016

  1. “How long do you have to wait for your train?” the woman asked me. “About an hour,” I replied.

Ans: The woman asked me how long she had to wait for your train. I replied that she had to wait about an hours.

2. I asked Ranjan where Neena lived. Ranjan replied regretfully that he didn’t know.

Ans: I said to Ranjan,” where does Neena live?’’. Ranjan replied,’’ sorry! I don’t know’’.

  1. ‘Where do you go every Sunday?’ I asked the girl, She replied, ‘I go to the Church.’

Ans: I asked the girl where she went every sunday. she replied that she went to the church.

2. The teacher asked Rumi if she had read the Bible. She replied that She hadn’t.

Ans: the teacher said to Rumi,”Have you read the Bible?”. She replied,”I have not.”

Narration HS 2nd year- 2014

  1. The lady said to the salesman, “What is the price of this Barbie doll?” The salesman said to her, “It is a bit expensive. But I can give it to you at a 20 percent discount”.

Ans: The lady asked the salesman What the price of that Barbie doll was. The salesman replied to her that it was a bit expensive but he could give it to her at a 20 percent discount.

2. One day Mohan told me that he would become a doctor and leave Assam. I asked him if he knew anything about medicine.

Ans: One day Mohan said to me,” I will become a doctor and leave Assam. I said to him ,”Do you know anything about medicine.?”

Narration HS 2nd year- 2013

  1. “Why aren’t you wearing chappals?” I ask one boy.

“My mother does not bring them down from the shelf”, he answers simply.

Ans:I ask one boy why he is not wearing chappals.

He answers simply that his mother did not bring them down from the shelf.

2. One day Mukesh told me that he would be a motor mechanic and leave Firozabad. I asked him if he knew anything about cars.

Ans: One day Mukesh said to me,” I will become a motor mechanic and leave Firozabad. I said to him ,”Do you know anything about cars.?”

Narration HS 2nd year- 2011

  1. Rajmi asked her friends if they were ready to go with her.

They wanted to know what her intention was.

Ans. Rajmi said to her friends, “Are you ready to go with me?”

“What is  your intention?” Said they.

2. The boy requested that he might be allowed to get in. But the teacher said, “No.”

Ans. The boy said, “Let me get in please”.

But the teacher replied in the negative.

Or

But the teacher forbade him to get in.

Narration HS 2nd year- 2010

  1. I said to him, “How long will you Stay?” He replied, “for five days.” (D)

Ans. I asked him how long he would stay. He replied that he would stay for five days. (I)

2. The boy humbly requested the teacher to excuse him any promised that he would never do so again. (I)

Ans. The boy said to the teacher, “Excuse me, sir. I will never do so again.” (D)

Narration HS 2nd year- 2009

  1. Rohit said to his friends, “Let us go and help the flood affected people (D)

Ans. Rohit suggested to his friends that they should go and help the flood affected people. (I)

2. I asked Priyam what she was doing. Priyam replied that she was preparing her lessons.

Ans. I said to Priyam, “What are you doing?” I am preparing my lessons,” said Priyam.

Narration HS 2nd year- 2008

  1. “Rashmi” Karan said, “I have a very important matter to discuss with you today, so you must give me your attention.”

Ans. Karan told Rashmi that he had a very important mater to discuss with her that day and so she must (had to) give him her attention.

2. The teacher ordered Joe to stand up and asked him. Why he had not prepared his lesson. He also told him that he would write to his (Joe’s) father.

Ans. The teacher said to Joe, “Stand up. Why haven’t you prepared your lesson? I shall write to your father.”

Narration HS 2nd year- 2007

  1. He said, “I do not wish to see any of you; go away.”

Ans. He said that he did not wish to see any of them and so he asked them to go away.

2. The traveler asked the peasant if he could tell him the way to the nearest inn. The peasant replied that he could.

Ans. The traveler said to the peasant, “Can you tell me the way to the nearest inn?” “Yes,” said the peasant. [2004]

Narration HS 2nd year- 2006

  1. “Hercules”, said the Goddess of virtue, “I offer myself to you because I know you are descended from the gods and that you have given proofs of that by your love of virtue.”

Ans. The Goddess of virtue told Hercules that she offered herself to him because she knew that he was descended from the gods and that he had given proofs of that by his love of virtue.

2. When John asked Marry whether she would help him, she replied that she would.

Ans. When John said to Marry, “Will you help me?” Marry said, “Yes, I will.”

Narration HS 2nd year- 2005

  1. “Nothing can be avoided,” said to Caesar, “Which the gods have purposed. The omens appear to everyone, not only to Caesar.”

Ans. Caesar said that nothing could be avoided which the gods had purposed. He added that those omens appeared to everyone, not only to Caesar.

2. The teacher asked the student if he had prepared his lesson. The student replied politely that he had not.

Ans. The teacher said to the student, “Have you prepared your lesson?” “No sir,” said the student.

Narration HS 2nd year- 2004

  1. The traveler said to the peasant, “Can you show me the nearest inn? “Yes”, said the peasant.

Ans. The traveler asked the peasant if he could show him the nearest inn. The peasant replied that he could.

2. She said to her son that she was old and lonely and asked him if he had no pity on her loneliness.

Ans. She said to her son, “I am old and lonely. Don’t you have pity on my loneliness?”

Narration HS 2nd year- 2003

  1. “I’ve just bought a car,” said Peter, “But it isn’t insured yet. So I cannot take you for a ride.”

Ans. Peter said that he had just bought a car but it wasn’t insured till then. So, he could not take me for a ride.

2. The man said that they had been there for two and a half years and were going to stay another six months.

Ans. The man said, “We have been here for two and a half years. We are going to stay another six months.”

Narration HS 2nd year- 2002

  1. The boy said to the teacher, “Sir, I am weak in English and seek your advice.”

Ans. I said to my friend, “Why do you look to sad? He said, “My father is seriously ill. There is little hope for his recovery.”

2. I asked Rita what she was doing. Rita replied that she was preparing her lesson.

Ans. I said to Rita, “What are you doing?” “I am preparing my lesson,” said Rita.

ADDITIONAL QUESTIONS ON NARRATION QUESTIONS FOR PRACTICE

1. (a) ‘Why do you do this?’, I ask Saheb whom I encounter every morning.

‘I have nothing else to do’, he mutters.

(b) Ramen asked Pradip if he could come with him to the library. Ramen replied that he would be busy that afternoon.

Ans. (a) I ask Saheb whom I encounter every morning why does he do that.

He mutters that he has nothing else to do.

(b) Ramen said to Pradip, ‘Can you come with me to the library?’ Ramen replied, ‘I shall be busy this afternoon’.

2. (a) Gandhi said to Shukla, I have to be in Calcutta on such and such a date. Come and meet me and take me from there.’

(b) I asked Ranjan where Neena lived. Ranjan replied regretfully that he didn’t know.

Ans. (a) Gandhi said to Shukla that he had to be in Calcutta on such and such a date. He also asked Shukla to come and meet him and take him from there.

Ans. (b) I said to Ranjan, ‘Where does Neena live?’ Ranjan said, ‘Sorry! I don’t know’.

3. (a) ‘You must take the dog out’. He said with sour venom.

‘I shall certainly do nothing of this kind’, said the woman.

(b) Adity asked Raj if his sister was at home, Raj replied that she was not. She had gone for shopping with their mother.

Ans. (a) He told with sour venom that she must take the dog out.

The woman replied that she would certainly do nothing of that kind.

Ans. (b) Adity said to Raj, ‘Is your sister at home?’.

Raj said, ‘She is not at home. She has gone for shopping with our mother’.

4. (a) ‘What is your name’? I asked the girl at the gate. ‘And where do you live’?

(b) He requested me to sit down for a few minutes. I told him that I would be late for school.

Ans. (a) I asked the girl at the gate what her name was. I also asked her where she lived.

Ans. (b) He said to me, ‘Please sit down for a few minutes.’ I said to him, ‘I shall be late for school’.

5. (a) ‘What did you do about’? I asked the man.

‘Nothing,’ he said. ‘I did absolutely nothing’.

(b) The teacher asked Namita if she had read The Diary of Anne Frank. Namita replied that she had not.

Ans. (a) I asked the man what he had done about.

He replied that he had done nothing. He added that he had done absolutely nothing.

Ans. (b) The teacher said to Namita, ‘Have you read the Diary of Anne Frank?’

Namita said, ‘I have not read’.

6. (a) ‘How long do you have to wait for your train?’, the woman asked me.

‘About an hour’, I replied.

(b) My mother asked me if I had posted the letter. I replied to her that I had.

Ans. (a) The woman said to me how long I had to wait for my train. I replied that I had to wait about an hour.

And. (b) My mother said to me, ‘Have you posted the letter?’ I said to her, ‘I have posted it.’

7. (a) Anil said to me, ‘What are you doing here?’

‘I am swimming,’ I replied.

(b) The doctor asked the patient how she was that morning. The patient replied that she still had the pain.

Ans. (a) Anil asked me what I was doing there.

I replied that I was swimming.

Ans. (b) The doctor said to the patient, ‘How are you this morning?’

The patient replied, ‘I still have the pain.’

8. (a) ‘I want to work for you’, I said to Anil.

‘Can you cook?’ Anil asked me.

(b) The main in the counter told me that the train would be an hour late.

I asked him at what time it would read Tinsukia.

Ans. (a) I said to Anil that I wanted to work for him.

Anil asked me if I could cook.

Ans. (b) The main in the counter said to me, ‘The train will be an hour late.’

I said to him, ‘At what time will it reach Tinsukia?’

9. (a) Anita said to me, ‘We re going Thailand next week’.

I asked her, ‘When will you return’?

(b) The teacher told me that I needed to improve my grammar. I replied that I would try hard.

Ans. (a) Anita told me that they were going to Thailand the next week.

I asked her when they would return.

Ans. (b) the teacher said to me, ‘You need to improve your grammar’.

I said, ‘I shall try hard’.

10. (a) He said to me, ‘I won’t be able to complete the work today. Can I come tomorrow and complete it?’

(b) I asked her if I liked the firm. She replied that she didn’t like it at all.

Ans. (a) He told me that he would not be able to complete the work that day. He again asked if he could come the

next day and complete it.
